Riberas del Ebro Natural Path
A well-maintained riverside path follows the Ebro's bank for several kilometres on either side of Lodosa, threading through gallery forests of white poplar and willow that feel like a different world from the sun-baked plateau above. Herons, kingfishers and the occasional otter share the trail with walkers and cyclists.
The Walk Itself
The most rewarding stretch begins at the old irrigation weir (azud) just south of the town bridge and follows the left bank downstream toward the Sotos de Lodosa — dense riverside woods that are protected as part of the broader Reserva Natural de las Riberas de Navarra. The flat, shaded path is suitable for all ages and most bikes.
In spring the path is lined with wild asparagus, flowering tamarisk and the calls of nightingales so loud they almost drown out the river. In autumn the poplars turn a fierce gold that reflects in the slow green water below.
Wildlife and Best Times
The Ebro here hosts a healthy population of great cormorants, grey herons and little egrets that fish openly from the gravel banks. Patient observers in the early morning may spot a kingfisher arrowing low over the water in an electric flash of blue and orange.
Dawn and dusk are the richest times for wildlife, and also the coolest in summer. Bring binoculars, wear mosquito repellent from June onward, and follow the waymarked Camino Natural del Ebro signs that pass through Lodosa as part of a longer multi-day route.
