Mercado Semanal de Lodosa
Every Thursday morning the streets near the town centre fill with stalls selling the vegetables that have made this corner of Navarre famous — fat red piquillo peppers, white asparagus thick as your thumb and locally grown tomatoes that taste of actual summer. It is a working market, not a tourist spectacle, and all the better for it.
What to Buy and Why
Lodosa's piquillo peppers hold a Denominación de Origen Protegida and the vendors here sell them fresh in season (September–October) or preserved in jars roasted over wood — a world away from the supermarket version. A jar makes the most flavourful souvenir you can legally carry home.
White asparagus from the sandy Ebro flood plain appears from late April through June. Locals buy it by the kilo and eat it the same day, simply boiled and dressed with olive oil — a combination that needs no improvement.
Market Atmosphere and Etiquette
Arrive before 10 am to see the market at full flow and to beat the midday heat in summer. Stall holders appreciate a greeting in Spanish — a simple 'buenos días' goes a long way and often unlocks a free taste.
The market doubles as a social event: elderly neighbours catch up over coffee at the bar on the square's edge, farmers compare harvests, and the whole scene gives you an authentic slice of Riberean daily life that no guided tour can replicate.
