Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción
Rising above Lodosa's rooftops like a stone exclamation mark, this 16th-century parish church is one of the most ambitious Gothic-Renaissance buildings in southern Navarre. Its soaring tower and richly carved retablo stop first-time visitors dead in their tracks.
A Church Built to Impress
Construction began in the early 1500s when Lodosa was a prosperous river town, and the ambition of its builders is written in every carved capital and ribbed vault. The single-nave interior feels cathedral-like, dwarfing visitors beneath a ceiling that seems to float.
The gilded main altarpiece is the undisputed star — a Baroque retablo packed with polychrome figures of saints, angels and biblical scenes that glow when the afternoon light catches them through the western windows.
Visiting Practically
The church sits on Plaza de los Fueros, the town's main square, making it easy to combine with a stroll through the old quarter. Ask at the Lodosa town hall (Ayuntamiento) for the current opening schedule, as hours are managed by the local parish.
Mass is celebrated on Sunday mornings, which is also the best moment to hear the church's historic organ and see the interior fully lit.
