Santuari de Gràcia

Carved into a sheer limestone cliff on the Puig de Randa, the Santuari de Gràcia is one of Mallorca's most dramatically sited religious buildings, its whitewashed façade pressed impossibly against the rock face. Pilgrims and hikers have been making the steep approach since the 14th century, and the reward is as spiritual as it is visual.

The approach and the architecture

The sanctuary sits roughly halfway up the 543-metre Puig de Randa, reached by a narrow road or a signed footpath from the village of Randa, just a few kilometres north of Llucmajor. The building appears to grow out of the cliff itself, its small chapel and adjacent hermit's cell sheltered by a natural rock overhang that acts as a giant stone canopy.

Inside, the chapel is intimate and cool, its walls hung with votive offerings left by grateful pilgrims over centuries. A carved image of the Virgin of Gràcia occupies the main altar, softly lit and surrounded by the quiet hum of devotion that has never really left this place.

Views and the wider Randa complex

From the terrace in front of the sanctuary you look out over the entire Llucmajor plain, the salt flats of S'Estanyol glinting in the distance and the sea a thin silver line on the horizon. On a clear winter morning the silhouettes of Cabrera and even Ibiza are visible.

Continue up the road another kilometre and you reach the Santuari de Cura at the very summit, home to a Franciscan community and a small museum dedicated to the medieval philosopher Ramon Llull, who reputedly retreated here after a vision. The combination of both sanctuaries in a single half-day excursion is one of the finest cultural walks in southern Mallorca.
