Llucmajor was once the shoemaking capital of Mallorca, and at its industrial peak in the early 20th century the town produced over a million pairs of shoes a year for export across Europe. The trail and the museum
The Museu de Llucmajor, housed in a restored building near the town centre, dedicates a significant section to the zapatería tradition, displaying original lasts, hand-stitching tools, ledgers from the great export houses and photographs of the factory floors that once hummed with activity. Entry is free or very low cost, and the staff are genuinely enthusiastic about sharing the town's story.
The walking trail links the museum with several surviving examples of the modest worker's houses — cases de sabater — built by the shoe companies for their employees in the early 1900s. Plaques on the walls identify key buildings, and the route passes the old market hall and the Gothic parish church of Sant Miquel, whose soaring nave is disproportionately grand for a town of this size.
The living craft
A handful of small workshops and family-run shops in the old town still produce handmade leather sandals and shoes using traditional techniques. Look for signs reading artesania del calçat on Carrer Major and the surrounding streets — the prices are higher than a mass-market resort shop but the quality and the story behind each pair are incomparable.
The best time to experience the shoemaking culture is during the Fira de Llucmajor, the town's annual autumn fair held in October, when craft demonstrations, food stalls and traditional music fill the streets and the shoemaking heritage takes centre stage in a celebration that has been running for over 700 years.
