Restaurant Ca'n Tia Taleca
Tucked into the quiet streets of Llucmajor town, Ca'n Tia Taleca is the kind of family-run restaurant that regulars guard jealously — a place where the menu changes with the season, the portions are generous to a fault, and the arròs brut (Mallorca's hearty rice-and-meat soup) is made exactly as it should be. This is where locals come for Sunday lunch, which is the highest possible endorsement.
What to order
Start with the pa amb oli loaded with local tomatoes and a slice of cured sobrassada or botifarró, then move to the arròs brut if the season is right — it is a thick, saffron-tinged rice dish with pork, chicken and seasonal vegetables that bears almost no resemblance to any other rice dish in Spain. In winter, the frit mallorquí (a sauté of offal, potatoes and vegetables) is deeply satisfying.
For dessert, the greixonera — a Mallorcan bread pudding flavoured with cinnamon and lemon zest — is the only correct choice. The local house wine, a simple negre from the Pla i Llevant DO, is honest and inexpensive and pairs perfectly with everything on the table.
The atmosphere and the setting
The dining room is unfussy: tiled floors, paper tablecloths, framed photographs of the town in earlier decades. The welcome is warm but no-nonsense, and the staff are happy to explain dishes in Spanish or Catalan even if their English is limited — bring a translation app and your appetite.
Lunch is the main event here; the kitchen typically runs from 13:00 to 15:30 and fills up fast on Wednesdays (market day) and weekends. Booking ahead for Sunday lunch is strongly advised.
