Capocorb Vell Talayot Viewpoint
The prehistoric settlement of Capocorb Vell, 12 km south of Llucmajor, is one of the largest and best-preserved talayotic sites in the Balearics, but it is also quietly one of the finest viewpoints on the island's southern coast. Stand on the flat plateau among the 3,000-year-old stone towers and the Mediterranean stretches uninterrupted to the horizon.
The archaeological site
Capocorb Vell dates to around 1000 BCE and comprises five talayots — massive conical stone towers — plus the remains of over 28 dwellings spread across a low limestone plateau. The dry-stone construction is strikingly precise for its age; the largest talayot stands nearly four metres high and you can climb inside to inspect the corbelled ceiling.
The site is managed by a private foundation and is one of the few talayotic settlements in Mallorca where you can walk freely among the structures rather than viewing them from behind a fence. The view and the light
Because the plateau sits on the edge of the southern cliffs, there is nothing between you and Africa but open sea. The light here in the late afternoon turns the limestone a deep amber, and the shadows cast by the talayots stretch long across the scrub — it is one of those places where ancient history and raw landscape reinforce each other perfectly.
The surrounding garrigue — rosemary, wild thyme, dwarf fan palms and lentisk — is alive with birds during spring migration. Bring binoculars: Eleonora's falcons hunt overhead from April onwards, using the thermals rising off the cliffs.
