Sentiero del Viandante — Lierna to Varenna Section
The Sentiero del Viandante is a centuries-old trading path that traces the entire eastern shore of Lake Como, and the short stretch between Lierna and Varenna (roughly 4 km one way) is widely considered its most scenic and accessible segment. Chestnut forest, dry-stone walls, and sudden lake vistas through the trees make every bend a small reward.
The Walk Itself
The trail begins at the northern edge of Lierna village, marked with red-and-white CAI waymarkers (route 1), and climbs gently through terraced olive groves before entering a cooler belt of mixed woodland.
At the hamlet of Vezio — about halfway — you can detour five minutes uphill to the Castello di Vezio, a ruined medieval tower with a resident falconry display and arguably the best high-angle view of Varenna's rooftops and the lake below.
Logistics & Return
The one-way distance from Lierna to Varenna ferry dock is approximately 4 km with around 200 m of ascent — comfortable for most walkers in 1.5 to 2 hours at a leisurely pace.
Return is easiest by Navigazione Laghi ferry from Varenna back to Lierna (boats run roughly every 30–60 minutes depending on season), turning the hike into a satisfying point-to-point loop.
