Lierna Old Village (Borgo Antico)
Perched on the hillside a short climb above the modern waterfront, Lierna's historic upper village is a tightly wound knot of stone alleys, arched passageways, and terracotta-roofed houses that has changed remarkably little since the 16th century. Almost no tour groups make the five-minute uphill walk, leaving you alone with cats, window boxes of geraniums, and the distant sound of the lake.
Architecture & Atmosphere
The borgo is anchored by the Romanesque parish church of Sant'Ambrogio, whose square bell tower dates to the 11th century and can be spotted from the water far below.
Wander the caruggi — the narrow covered lanes — and look for the carved stone lintels above doorways, many bearing family crests and dates from the 1500s and 1600s, silent evidence of the village's prosperous silk-trading past.
Practical Exploration
The upper village is best explored on foot; the main access lane begins at the junction of Via Statale and Via Castello and rises steeply for about 150 metres.
Several houses still have working vegetable gardens terraced into the hillside behind them — you'll catch glimpses of tomato plants and fig trees over low stone walls, a reminder that this is a living community, not an open-air museum.
