Punta Maralunga Coastal Path
The short but spectacular coastal footpath stretching south from Lerici towards San Terenzo and beyond to Punta Maralunga rewards walkers with unobstructed views over both the Gulf of La Spezia and the open Ligurian Sea — all within a 30-minute stroll from the town centre. Umbrella pines lean over the path and wild rosemary scents the air.
Walking the path
The trail begins at the southern end of Lerici's lungomare and hugs the rocky shoreline, passing small coves where locals drop into the sea directly from the rocks. The path is well-maintained and mostly flat, making it suitable for all fitness levels.
At Punta Maralunga itself, a natural rocky platform juts into the sea and provides a 270-degree panorama that takes in the Apuan Alps snow-capped in winter, the island of Palmaria, and on clear days the distant Cinque Terre headlands to the northwest.
Best times and what to bring
Early morning is magical here: the sea is glassy, fishing boats are heading out, and you will likely have the viewpoint entirely to yourself. Bring a coffee in a takeaway cup from Bar Centrale on the piazza and sip it on the rocks as the light builds.
In summer the path gets busy by mid-morning, so aim to be at Punta Maralunga before 9 a.m. or return after 6 p.m. when the day-trippers have left and the evening breeze cools the air considerably.
