Castello di Lerici

A fortress with a thousand-year story
Built by the Pisans in the 1200s and later expanded by the Genoese, the castle changed hands repeatedly as rival maritime powers fought for control of this strategic gulf. Its cylindrical tower and thick curtain walls tell that turbulent story better than any textbook.
Walk the full circuit of the outer walls at sunset and you will understand immediately why Romantic poets — Byron and Shelley among them — were so bewitched by this stretch of coast. The light turns the sea a deep cobalt and the terracotta rooftops below glow amber.
The paleontology museum inside
Few visitors expect to find dinosaur tracks inside a medieval castle, but the Museo Geopaleontologico does exactly that, displaying rare Jurassic footprints extracted from the local Apennine rock alongside ammonite fossils and geological maps of the Ligurian seabed.
The collection is compact but genuinely fascinating, and the bilingual panels make it accessible even if your Italian is limited. Budget about 45 minutes for both the museum and a full lap of the ramparts.
