Parque Lineal del Butarque
Following the course of the Río Butarque through Leganés, this long, leafy linear park is where the city breathes — joggers, cyclists, dog-walkers and families all claim their stretch of shaded path along the water. It is a surprisingly lush ribbon of nature for a place so close to the urban sprawl of southern Madrid.
What the park offers
The Butarque river corridor is lined with poplars, willows and native riparian vegetation that turns golden in October, making autumn the most photogenic season to visit by some margin.
Dedicated cycling and walking lanes run the length of the park and connect to broader greenway networks, so you can feasibly cycle all the way to the Manzanares river parks in Madrid with almost no road crossings.
Wildlife and quiet corners
Herons, kingfishers and egrets are regular sightings along the quieter northern stretches of the Butarque, and the reed beds shelter frogs and terrapins that children find endlessly fascinating.
Bring a picnic to one of the wooden tables near the Puente de los Pinos bridge — it is one of those genuinely peaceful spots that Madrid-area residents guard jealously and rarely mention to visitors.
