Mercado Municipal de Leganés
Tucked into the heart of the old town, the Mercado Municipal de Leganés is where locals have shopped for fresh produce, jamón and cheese for generations. It is the most honest, unhurried food-shopping experience you will find anywhere in the southern Community of Madrid.
The stalls worth lingering at
Charcutería counters groan with whole legs of Iberian ham and wheels of Manchego at prices noticeably lower than central Madrid markets, because the clientele here is almost entirely local.
The fruit and vegetable vendors source seasonally, so in autumn you will find persimmons, quince and wild mushrooms from the Guadarrama mountains piled in vivid, photogenic mounds.
How to make a morning of it
Arrive before 10:00 on a Saturday when the market is at its liveliest and the bar inside the building is already pulling café con leche for traders and shoppers alike.
After browsing, walk two blocks east to the Plaza de España de Leganés for a seat in the sun and a pastry from one of the surrounding bakeries — a perfectly local morning routine.
