Tucked into the heart of the old town, the Mercado Municipal is where Leganés residents have shopped for fruit, cheese, jamón and freshly butchered meat for generations. It is the kind of unhurried, genuinely local market that has all but vanished from central Madrid.
Stalls Worth Seeking Out
Head straight for the charcutería counters lining the central aisle, where whole legs of Iberian ham hang at eye level and vendors slice to order with practised precision. The cheese stalls stock manchego at every stage of curing — ask for a taste of the añejo before you commit.
The fishmongers receive daily deliveries from Mercamadrid, Madrid's wholesale fish market, meaning the bonito, dorada and gambas are as fresh here as anywhere in the region. Saturday morning is the busiest and most atmospheric session.
Eating and Exploring Around the Market
Several tapas bars cluster around the market entrance and open from mid-morning, serving cold caña beer and pincho de tortilla to shoppers resting their bags. It is one of the most authentic bar-hopping micro-routes in the entire southern commuter belt.
The surrounding streets of the casco histórico are lined with low-rise early-20th-century townhouses that give the neighbourhood a quietly photogenic character very different from the high-rise suburbs nearby.
