Parque de Polvoranca
Straddling the boundary between Leganés and Alcorcón, Parque de Polvoranca is one of the largest and least-visited urban parks in the entire Community of Madrid — a 130-hectare mosaic of pine forest, meadows, ponds and wetlands that feels nothing like the city surrounding it. On a weekday morning you may have entire pine-shaded paths entirely to yourself.
Exploring the park
The park is threaded with well-marked trails suitable for walking, trail running and mountain biking, with the central Laguna de Polvoranca serving as the scenic heart — a reed-fringed lake that attracts ducks, coots and the occasional great crested grebe.
A network of wooden boardwalks crosses the wettest sections of the park, letting you get close to the water's edge without disturbing the vegetation — early morning mist over the lagoon in autumn is genuinely spectacular.
Practical details for visitors
The park has several entry points; the most convenient from Leganés is off Calle Colonia del Moro, which puts you directly on the main trail network within minutes.
A small environmental interpretation centre near the main entrance explains the park's ecosystem and is worth a quick stop, especially if you are visiting with children who want to know what they are looking at in the wetlands.
