Piani d'Erna via Funivia
A six-minute cable-car ride from the Rancio district whisks you 1,370 metres up to the Piani d'Erna plateau, where the entire Lecco branch of Lake Como unfolds below like a crumpled blue map. On clear days the view stretches south to Milan's haze and north to the snowy Rhaetian Alps.
The ride and the plateau
The Funivia Lecco–Piani d'Erna has been running since 1939 and the original cabins have a retro charm that feels part of the experience. The plateau at the top is a broad Alpine meadow ringed by limestone crags — perfect for a gentle post-arrival stroll.
A handful of rifugi (mountain huts) serve polenta, local cheese and cold Nastro Azzurro, so there is no need to pack a heavy lunch.
Hiking onward to Rifugio Stoppani
From the plateau a well-marked trail (approximately 1.5 hours one way) leads to Rifugio Resegone and the jagged Resegone ridge, the serrated silhouette that Alessandro Manzoni immortalised in I Promessi Sposi.
Even a short 20-minute walk from the cable-car station to the Belvedere lookout point delivers a vertiginous drop straight down to Lecco's red rooftops and the glittering lake — one of the most dramatic urban viewpoints in all of Lombardy.
