Basilica di San Nicolò
Rising above the Piazza XX Settembre with a campanile tall enough to orient you anywhere in the city, the Basilica di San Nicolò is Lecco's spiritual and architectural centrepiece. Its neo-Gothic facade and richly frescoed interior reward anyone who steps off the lakefront promenade and through its heavy doors.
Architecture Worth Craning Your Neck For
The bell tower stands 96 metres tall — the tallest in Lombardy outside Milan — and its pale stone catches the morning light in a way that makes it glow against the backdrop of Monte Resegone. The facade was completed in the 19th century but the church's roots stretch back to the 11th century, layering centuries of Lombard devotion into every stone.
Inside, look up at the barrel-vaulted ceiling decorated with vivid 19th-century frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Saint Nicholas. The proportions are grander than the modest lakeside town might lead you to expect, and the silence inside is a welcome contrast to the busy waterfront just metres away.
Manzoni's Lecco and the Church's Place in It
Alessandro Manzoni, Italy's most celebrated 19th-century novelist, grew up in Lecco and set much of 'I Promessi Sposi' here. The basilica features in the novel's emotional landscape, making a visit feel like stepping into living Italian literature.
Pick up a free parish leaflet at the entrance — it maps the key artistic features in Italian and English and points out the original Romanesque elements that survived successive rebuilds. The church is free to enter and rarely crowded before 10 am.
