Mercato di Lecco (Piazza Garibaldi & surrounds)
Every Saturday morning Lecco's central streets around Piazza Garibaldi and Via Cavour fill with a proper working-class market that has been running for generations — no artisan-lifestyle posturing, just farmers, fishmongers and textile traders doing brisk business with the locals.
What to look for
The food stalls are the real draw: vendors from the Valsassina valley sell aged formai de mut cheese, dried mushrooms from the pre-Alpine forests and cured meats that cost a third of what you would pay in Milan's gourmet delis.
A cluster of lake-fish sellers near the Via Cavour end typically offer fresh agoni (shad) and lavarello (whitefish) pulled from Como that morning — the same fish that end up in Lecco's traditional missoltini (sun-dried, pressed lake fish).
Beyond the food
Textile and household-goods stalls stretch along the side streets, and it is entirely normal to see elderly nonnas haggling over curtain fabric with the same intensity they bring to the cheese counter.
Arrive by 09:00 for the best selection and the most atmospheric bustle; by noon the stalls begin to pack away and the bars fill up with traders taking their well-earned aperitivo.
