Mercato di Lecco (Piazza Lega Lombarda)
Every Wednesday morning Piazza Lega Lombarda and the surrounding streets transform into one of the liveliest weekly markets on the eastern arm of Lake Como, drawing locals from across the province for produce, clothing, cheese and the particular pleasure of eavesdropping on Lombard dialect bargaining. It is the most authentic slice of everyday Lecco life you can find.
What to Buy and Where to Look
The food stalls cluster near the piazza's northern end and are where the market earns its reputation. Look for stalls selling local formaggi di malga (alpine pasture cheeses), bresaola from the nearby Valtellina valley, fresh porcini mushrooms in season (September–October) and honeys from Lecco province beekeepers who label their jars with the specific wildflower source.
Alongside food, the market spreads into textiles, household goods and seasonal plants. Locals shop here for practical reasons rather than tourist ones, which keeps prices honest and the atmosphere refreshingly unperformed.
Eating and Drinking Around the Market
The bars around Piazza Lega Lombarda do a roaring trade on Wednesday mornings. Pull up a stool at Bar Centrale or any of the small caffès on Via Cavour and order a caffè and a cornetto alongside the market-going nonne — it costs under €2 and is a masterclass in Lombard morning ritual.
A short walk from the market, the covered Mercato Coperto on Via Amendola is worth a detour for its permanent stalls of local salumi and fresh pasta, open Tuesday to Saturday.
