Trattoria Al Funghetto

A no-frills trattoria that has been feeding Latina's working population since the 1970s, Al Funghetto on Via Ezio is the kind of place where the handwritten daily menu changes with the market and the house wine arrives in an unlabelled carafe without being asked. It is the most honest expression of Pontine home cooking in the city.

What to Order

Start with the bruschetta al tartufo nero dei Lepini — the black truffle from the nearby Lepini Hills is earthy and intensely fragrant, nothing like the truffle oil found in tourist restaurants. Follow it with pasta e fagioli con le cotiche, a thick bean and pork-rind soup that is the definitive cold-weather dish of the Pontine plain.

For a secondo, the abbacchio alla cacciatora (young lamb braised with white wine, rosemary and anchovy) is the regional benchmark. On Fridays, the kitchen pivots to fish: look for spaghetti alle vongole veraci made with clams from the nearby Tyrrhenian coast, ordered by the bucket from the Terracina fish market that morning.

The Atmosphere

The dining room is small, loud and decorated with the kind of cheerful clutter that only decades of loyal custom can produce — signed football shirts, old photographs of the Pontine reclamation, a wall calendar from a local agricultural cooperative.

Lunch is the main event: tables fill by 12:30 and the best dishes sell out by 13:30. Booking is strongly advised for Friday and Saturday. Dinner is served but the atmosphere is quieter and the menu shorter.

A full three-course lunch with wine and water rarely exceeds €22 per person, making it one of the best-value serious meals in Lazio.
