Mercato Coperto di Latina
Tucked inside a purpose-built covered hall just off the city centre, Latina's Mercato Coperto is where the Pontine Plain's legendary agricultural abundance lands on the table every morning. Strawberries from Terracina, buffalo mozzarella from nearby farms, and fat local artichokes jostle for space in a riot of colour and noise.

The Agro Pontino is one of Lazio's most productive farming zones, and the covered market is its delicious proof. Vendors here sell produce that was often harvested the same morning — look for the fragrant Fragola di Terracina strawberries in spring and the prized Carciofo Romanesco artichokes from February to April.
Buffalo dairy is another star: small producers from the Pontine area bring fresh mozzarella and burrata that bear no resemblance to the supermarket version. Ask vendors where their milk comes from and you'll get a proud ten-minute geography lesson.
How to Shop Like a Local
Arrive before 9 am to catch the best selection and to watch the market at its most animated — traders call out prices, grandmothers squeeze tomatoes and the smell of fresh herbs fills the hall.
Pick up a paper cone of olives marinated in local herbs, a wedge of Pecorino Romano and a handful of taralli for an impromptu picnic. The market spills onto the surrounding streets on Saturday mornings, when additional stalls selling clothes, household goods and street food extend the experience considerably.
Most vendors accept cash only, so visit the ATM on Via Ezio before you arrive.
