Mercato Centrale di Latina
Every weekday morning the Mercato Centrale on Via Ezio fills with farmers from the Pontine Plain offloading buffalo mozzarella, wild chicory, artichokes, and the fat Agro Pontino strawberries that locals swear are the sweetest in Italy. This is not a tourist market — it is where Latina actually eats.
What to look for
The Pontine Plain is one of Lazio's most productive agricultural zones, drained from marshland in the 1930s, and the market reflects that bounty: stalls groan with zucchini blossoms, fresh ricotta, and wheels of Pecorino Romano brought in from nearby farms.
Arrive before 9 a.m. to catch the best selection and to see the animated haggling between vendors and the nonnas who have been shopping here for decades.
Eating around the market
A handful of small bars and alimentari around the market perimeter sell freshly made panini stuffed with local cured meats — the porchetta from the Castelli Romani hills nearby is particularly good and costs just a couple of euros.
If you visit in spring, look specifically for the violetto artichoke from Sezze, grown on the hillside just 20 km away, which is sweeter and more tender than the Roman variety and rarely exported.
