Palazzo M (Palazzo del Governo)
Rising eleven storeys above Piazza del Popolo, Latina's landmark Palazzo M is one of Italy's best-preserved examples of Rationalist architecture, built in just 253 days in 1932. Its stark white travertine facade and the giant letter M — for Mussolini — carved into the tower make it a genuinely unmissable piece of 20th-century history.
Architecture frozen in time
The building was designed by Oriolo Frezzotti as the centrepiece of the newly founded city of Littoria, and every detail — from the rhythmic arched loggia to the clock tower — was engineered to project power and modernity simultaneously.
Walk around the full perimeter before going inside: the proportions shift dramatically depending on your angle, and the interplay of light on travertine changes completely between morning and afternoon.
Inside and around the piazza
The ground-floor atrium still contains original Fascist-era reliefs and mosaic floors that have been carefully preserved as historical documents rather than glorified.
Piazza del Popolo itself is the social heart of Latina: locals sip espresso at the surrounding bars in the early evening passeggiata, making it the perfect place to watch the city come alive after dark.
