Chapelle Saint-Didier & the Tanneries Quarter
Almost every visitor to Langres stays inside the ramparts, but the lower town that tumbles down the hillside toward the Marne valley hides one of the most atmospheric and overlooked corners of the entire region. The old tanneries quarter, centred on the Rue des Tanneries and the tiny Chapelle Saint-Didier, feels genuinely unpolished and all the better for it.
A Working-Class History Written in Stone
From the 16th to the 19th century, Langres was a major centre of leather tanning, and the buildings of the lower town — low, half-timbered, with wide doorways for drying hides — still carry the memory of that industry. The Chapelle Saint-Didier, a Romanesque chapel of the 12th century, sits at the heart of the neighbourhood in a state of dignified, mossy quietness.
The chapel is often locked but the exterior apse, with its blind arcading and hand-cut stone, is worth the ten-minute walk down from the ramparts on its own. Ring the number posted on the door and a volunteer keyholder will sometimes open it for you.
How to Explore the Quarter
Walk down from the Porte Gallo-Romaine (the ancient Roman gate on the north side of the ramparts) and follow the steep lane toward the lower town. The contrast with the polished tourist circuit above is immediate: cats on windowsills, vegetable gardens behind iron gates, a water fountain still running in a stone trough.
The quarter connects to a riverside path along the Bonnelle stream, which you can follow back up to rejoin the main road. The whole loop from the Porte Gallo-Romaine and back takes about 45 minutes and you are unlikely to share it with more than one or two other visitors.
