Belvédère du Petit Grevier
A short drive south of the old town, this clifftop belvedere delivers the most dramatic view in the Haute-Marne: the vast Lac de la Liez glittering below the limestone escarpment on which Langres perches. It is the kind of scene that stops conversation mid-sentence.
The Plateau Edge at Its Most Dramatic
The belvedere sits at the very lip of the plateau, giving a near-vertical drop of around 100 metres to the lake shore below. The Lac de la Liez — one of four reservoirs that supply the Rhine-Marne canal — stretches for kilometres, its surface colour shifting from steel-blue to turquoise depending on the season and light.
A short gravel path leads from the roadside parking to the viewing platform; the walk takes five minutes and is suitable for most fitness levels. Picnic tables nearby make this a natural lunch stop on a sunny day.
When to Visit for the Best Light
Morning visits reward you with mist rising off the lake surface in spring and autumn, creating an almost Japanese ink-wash atmosphere. By mid-morning the mist clears and the water turns brilliant blue, ideal for photography.
Summer evenings are equally magical: the setting sun catches the far shore and the cathedral towers of Langres are visible on the skyline behind you, completing a composition that puts the whole region in one frame.
