Parc de la Barbotière
Less than ten minutes' walk from Place Napoléon, the Parc de la Barbotière wraps around a calm lake fringed with willows, wildflower meadows and shaded walking paths that feel a world away from the city's neoclassical grid. It's where Yonnais families come on Sunday mornings to breathe, and it rewards slow exploration.
The lake and its wildlife
The Barbotière lake is a genuine wildlife corridor within the urban fabric. Herons stand motionless in the shallows at dawn, kingfishers streak between the willows, and in spring the reed beds hum with warblers. Bring binoculars if you have them — the birdwatching is quietly excellent for a city park.
A flat, well-maintained loop path circles the entire lake in about forty minutes at a leisurely pace, passing wooden observation platforms that jut over the water and offer clear views across to the wooded far bank.
How to make the most of a visit
The park has a dedicated children's play area and open lawns that fill with picnickers on warm weekends, so it works equally well as a family half-day or a solo morning run. The western end of the park transitions into a wilder riparian zone where the path narrows and the crowds thin.
Sunrise visits in autumn are particularly atmospheric: mist sits on the water, the willows turn gold, and the city noise is almost entirely absent. Pack a thermos and claim a bench on the east bank for the best light.
