Marché du Centre-Ville
Every Saturday morning, the streets fanning out from Place Napoléon transform into one of the Pays de la Loire's liveliest weekly markets, drawing farmers, cheesemakers and charcutiers from across the Vendée. Arrive before 9 a.m. to catch the full spread before the crowds descend.
What to Buy and Taste
The Vendée is serious dairy country, and the market reflects it: look for Beurre de la Vendée (a prized AOP butter with a naturally golden hue), fresh Mogette de Vendée white beans, and the region's famously rich brioche vendéenne, braided and lightly perfumed with orange blossom.
Charcuterie stalls pile high with Vendée ham — cured and smoked over beech wood — alongside rillettes, black pudding and dried sausages. A wedge of local goat's cheese and a hunk of bread make the perfect impromptu breakfast eaten standing at the market edge.
The Market's Atmosphere and Layout
The market spills across several streets and the square itself, with flower sellers adding splashes of colour between the food stalls. It's a genuinely local affair — you'll hear more Vendéen accents than tourist chatter.
A handful of hot-food vendors sell freshly cooked galettes, roasted chickens and paella from giant pans, filling the air with wood-smoke and garlic. Grab a paper tray and find a bench on the square for a front-row seat to the city's Saturday social life.
