Marché du Centre-Ville
Twice a week, Place Napoléon and the surrounding streets transform into one of the Vendée's most vibrant open-air markets, piled high with mogettes beans, Challans duck, local goat's cheeses and strawberries from the nearby bocage. It's the most honest snapshot of what people in this corner of Pays de la Loire actually eat.
What to look for on the stalls
Mogette de Vendée — the small white haricot bean with Protected Geographical Indication status — is the undisputed star. Buy them dried from a local grower and you'll understand why Vendéens treat them with the reverence Tuscans reserve for cannellini. Pair them mentally with a slab of jambon de Vendée cured with sea salt and local spices.
The cheese stalls are equally compelling. Look for fresh chèvre logs rolled in ash or herbs from small farms in the bocage, alongside firmer aged rounds. Vendors are usually happy to hand over a sliver to taste before you commit.
Timing your visit right
Wednesday mornings draw a loyal crowd of retirees and chefs doing their weekly shop, which means the produce is serious and the conversation is even more so. Saturday is larger and livelier, with more artisan producers and a festive atmosphere that spills into the surrounding café terraces by mid-morning.
Arrive before 9 am if you want the pick of the seasonal fruit; by 11 am the strawberry and melon crates are often stripped bare. The market winds down around 1 pm.
