Parc de la Barboire
A ten-minute walk from the city centre, Parc de la Barboire is La Roche-sur-Yon's finest green escape — 35 hectares of landscaped parkland threaded with streams, ponds and century-old trees that feel worlds away from the urban grid outside its gates. Locals jog, picnic and row here; you should too.
The Park's Landscape and Character
The park was designed in the English landscape style in the 19th century, with deliberately informal paths that wind past weeping willows, ornamental bridges and a large central lake. It's a deliberate counterpoint to the rigid Napoleonic geometry of the streets surrounding it.
In spring, the banks of the lake are carpeted with wildflowers and the trees are at their most theatrical. Autumn brings a warm palette of amber and copper that reflects beautifully in the still water — a photographer's gift.
Activities and What to Bring
Pedal boats and rowing boats are available for hire on the lake in summer, making for a genuinely relaxing hour on the water. The park also has well-maintained walking and cycling paths that connect to the city's wider greenway network.
There are several shaded picnic areas equipped with benches — pick up supplies from the Saturday market or a boulangerie on Rue Clemenceau and make an afternoon of it. A small children's play area near the main entrance makes it equally good for families.
