The Historial de la Vendée
The Historial is a world-class regional history museum set in a striking contemporary building that rises from the bocage landscape like a stone ship. Its permanent collection covers 10,000 years of Vendée history, but the Vendée War galleries — with immersive audiovisuals, original artefacts and unflinching historical honesty — are the undisputed centrepiece.
The museum's architecture alone is worth the trip: designed to echo the region's hedgerow landscape, it uses local materials and natural light with real intelligence. Budget at least two hours inside.
The Chemin de la Mémoire Walking Route
From the Historial, a marked path leads through fields and woodland to the Chapelle du Petit Luc, a small 19th-century memorial chapel built on the site where 564 villagers — including 110 children — were killed by Republican troops in February 1794. The walk takes about 20 minutes each way and passes through genuinely beautiful bocage countryside.
The chapel is simple, spare and deeply affecting. Standing in the silence of the surrounding fields, with larks overhead and the distant sound of cattle, the weight of what happened here lands differently than it does in any museum. It's not a comfortable visit, but it is an unforgettable one.
