Rocca Sforzesca di Imola
Rising above the city centre with its four square towers and a wide moat still filled with water, the 14th-century Rocca Sforzesca is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in all of Emilia-Romagna — yet it sees a fraction of the visitors that flock to more famous castles in the region. Inside the Fortress Walls
The interior houses a permanent collection of antique weapons, armour and siege machinery spread across the original guardrooms and great hall. The collection is not enormous but the setting — original stone floors, arrow slits, vaulted ceilings — gives every piece a context that a conventional museum could never replicate.
Climb to the top of the keep for a panoramic view over Imola's terracotta rooftops toward the Apennine foothills to the south. On a clear day in autumn or winter you can see snow-capped peaks above the tree line, and the circuit's grandstands are clearly visible to the east.
The Moat Garden and Evening Atmosphere
The grassy banks around the moat have been landscaped into a public park where Imolesi jog, walk dogs and eat gelato on warm evenings. It is a genuinely lovely urban green space and completely free to enjoy at any hour. The fortress is spectacularly floodlit after dark, making it one of the most atmospheric evening walks in the city.
In summer the moat area hosts open-air cinema screenings and occasional concerts — check the Comune di Imola events calendar for dates, as these events are priced for locals rather than tourists and represent extraordinary value.
