Museo di San Domenico
Housed in the beautifully restored complex of a former Dominican convent, the Museo di San Domenico holds one of Emilia-Romagna's most underrated collections of medieval and Renaissance art, ceramics and archaeological finds. The serene cloistered courtyard alone justifies the entrance fee.
Highlights of the Collection
The museum's pride is its collection of majolica ceramics produced in Imola's own workshops between the 15th and 18th centuries — delicate tin-glazed pieces painted with grotesque motifs, heraldic animals and biblical scenes that rival anything in the more famous Faenza museum just 15 km up the road. The ceramics galleries are arranged chronologically and the quality of the labelling makes them genuinely educational even without a guide.
The pinacoteca (picture gallery) upstairs contains altarpieces and devotional panels by local masters including Innocenzo da Imola, a painter who trained under Francesco Francia in Bologna and produced luminous Madonnas that deserve far wider recognition. His 'Adoration of the Magi' on the first floor is particularly striking.
The Cloister and Temporary Exhibitions
The 15th-century cloister at the heart of the complex is planted with a formal garden of clipped box hedges and a central well. It is one of the most peaceful spots in the entire city and a wonderful place to sit quietly between gallery rooms, especially on a warm afternoon when swallows circle overhead.
The museum hosts ambitious temporary exhibitions — past shows have explored the archaeology of the Roman via Aemilia and the history of the local textile industry. Check the museum's website before your visit as a good temporary show can add a full extra hour to your stay.
