Mercato Coperto di Imola
Imola's covered municipal market on Via Emilia has been the beating heart of the town's food culture since the 19th century, and on a weekday morning it buzzes with the kind of authentic, unhurried energy that tourist-heavy cities have long since lost. Come hungry — the stalls are stacked with mortadella, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano wheels, hand-rolled pasta and local Sangiovese wines.
What to Buy
The salumi counters are the undisputed stars: look for locally produced mortadella di Bologna IGP sliced paper-thin, culatello from the Po lowlands and ciccioli — crispy pork cracklings that are an Emilian obsession. Several vendors will vacuum-pack products for travelling.
Fresh pasta stalls sell sfoglia tirata a mano — hand-rolled egg pasta sheets — alongside tortelloni stuffed with ricotta and spinach. Watching a nonna roll pasta with a metre-long rolling pin at 8 am is worth the early alarm alone.
Eating on the Spot
A handful of tiny bars inside the market serve espresso and warm crescentine (fried dough pillows) stuffed with squacquerone cheese from around 7 am — this is the real Imolese breakfast, not a cappuccino in a hotel lobby.
On Friday mornings the market expands onto the surrounding streets with a broader outdoor section selling seasonal produce, local honey, ceramics and clothing, making it the best single morning to visit.
