Necròpolis del Puig des Molins
Beneath an unassuming hillside just west of Dalt Vila lies one of the best-preserved Phoenician-Punic necropolises on earth — over 3,000 rock-cut hypogea (underground tombs) honeycombing the soft sandstone, with a world-class museum above ground that almost nobody on the island seems to visit.
The Archaeological Site
The necropolis was in continuous use from the 7th century BC through the Roman period — roughly 1,300 years of burials — making it an extraordinary stratigraphic record of Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman funerary culture in the western Mediterranean.
You can walk through a section of the excavated hillside on a guided path, peering into the dark rectangular mouths of tomb chambers where archaeologists found terracotta oil lamps, amulets of the Egyptian god Bes, and glass unguentaria still faintly scented after 2,500 years.
The sheer density of tombs is astonishing — in places they are stacked three levels deep, the upper chambers reached by carved footholds in the rock.
The Museum
The on-site Museu Monogràfic del Puig des Molins displays the finest objects recovered from the tombs: golden jewellery, alabaster perfume vessels, bronze razors, and hundreds of the distinctive terracotta masks and figurines that made Ibiza a major cult centre in the ancient world.
The standout piece is a large painted terracotta bust of a Punic goddess — possibly Tanit, Ibiza's patron deity — whose serene, slightly archaic smile has been staring out of this hillside for 2,400 years.
Why It's Overlooked
The site sits on a quiet residential street (Via Romana) about 700 metres from the harbour, but almost no signage points to it from the tourist areas and it rarely appears in hotel concierge recommendations.
Visitor numbers are low enough that you will frequently have the tomb paths entirely to yourself — a surreal experience given that you are standing in a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
