Mercat Vell (Old Market) – Plaça de la Constitució

Tucked into a handsome 19th-century iron-and-stone arcade just outside the walls of Dalt Vila, the Mercat Vell is where Ibiza Town's residents have bought their fruit, vegetables, fish and flowers every morning for over a century — and it remains gloriously un-touristy.

What You'll Find Inside

The ground floor is a tight grid of stalls selling blood-red tomatoes from Sant Antoni, fat figs, local almonds, and the island's prized flor de sal harvested from the Ses Salines salt flats — a far better souvenir than anything sold on the harbour.

A handful of fishmongers display the morning's catch from the Balearic Sea: red mullet, dentex, and the occasional swordfish steak laid out on crushed ice with the matter-of-fact pride of people who know exactly how good their product is.

Upstairs, a small balcony level holds a few household-goods stalls and a bar where older locals drink café amb llet and argue about football — join them.

Best Time to Visit

The market is liveliest between 8 am and 10 am Tuesday through Saturday, when stallholders are still arranging displays and the air smells of cut herbs and sea salt.

By 1 pm most fresh produce is gone and shutters start coming down; Sunday sees a smaller, quieter version worth a quick look if you're already in the neighbourhood.

Eating Around the Market

The square outside — Plaça de la Constitució — is ringed with cafés where you can eat a pa amb oli (Mallorcan-style bread rubbed with tomato and olive oil, topped with local cheese or cured meats) for under €6.

Bar San Juan on nearby Carrer de Guillem de Montgrí is a standing-room-only locals' bar that has been serving cheap tapas and cold Estrella Damm since 1929 — the croquetas de bacallà are non-negotiable.
