Mercat Vell (Old Market) – Ibiza Town's Daily Fresh Market
Tucked inside a handsome 19th-century iron-and-stone building on Plaça de la Constitució, the Mercat Vell is where Ibiza Town's residents have bought their fruit, vegetables, fish and charcuterie every morning for generations. It is refreshingly free of tourist theatre and genuinely useful.
What to Buy
The ground floor belongs to local farmers selling sun-ripened tomatoes, fragrant herbs and the island's own flor de sal sea salt harvested from the Ses Salines salt flats. Look for sobrasada — the paprika-laced cured sausage unique to the Balearics — and the soft, creamy cheese called formatget.
Upstairs, a handful of stalls sell fresh fish landed that morning at the nearby port. Whole dentex, red mullet and sea bream lie on crushed ice; arrive before 09:00 for the best selection before the restaurant buyers have cleaned out the premium catch.
Around the Market
The square outside buzzes with a small daily flea-market selling vintage clothing, jewellery and hand-painted ceramics. It is low-key compared to the famous hippie markets elsewhere on the island, but prices reflect that — this is where locals actually shop.
Several no-frills café-bars ring the square; grab a cortado and a pa amb oli (bread rubbed with tomato and olive oil) at Bar Plaça de la Constitució for a classic Ibizan breakfast that costs under €4.
