Mirador del Savinar (Torre des Savinar)
Perched on a jagged cliff edge at the island's southwestern tip, the 18th-century watchtower Torre des Savinar delivers the single most dramatic viewpoint in Ibiza — a direct, eye-level confrontation with the mythical rock islet Es Vedrà rising 382 metres sheer from a cobalt sea.
The Hike to the Tower
From the small car park off the PM-803 near Cala d'Hort, a rocky trail winds 1.2 km through rosemary scrub and red-earth outcrops to the tower — allow 25 minutes each way and wear proper shoes, as the path ends at an unguarded cliff edge.
The tower itself is a squat, cylindrical Mallorcan watchtower built in 1763 to spot Barbary pirates; you can scramble up its exterior for an even higher vantage, though the last metre requires a confident step.
In the late afternoon the light turns the limestone of Es Vedrà pink-gold and the sea below shifts through every shade of blue imaginable — photographers routinely set up tripods here two hours before sunset.
Es Vedrà: The Mythology
Es Vedrà is said to be the tip of the lost city of Atlantis, a claim enthusiastically promoted by everyone from local fishermen to international wellness retreats, but the island is undeniably eerie: it hosts one of the largest colonies of Eleonora's falcons in the Mediterranean and compasses reportedly malfunction nearby.
The rock is a protected nature reserve — no landing is permitted — which only adds to its mystique; boat tours from Cala d'Hort circle it at a respectful distance.
Combining with Cala d'Hort
After the hike, drop down to Cala d'Hort beach (15 minutes by car), a pebble-and-sand cove with direct views of Es Vedrà and two excellent chiringuitos — Restaurant Cala d'Hort serves grilled fish caught that morning.
The combination of a sunset hike to the tower followed by dinner on the beach with Es Vedrà silhouetted against the darkening sky is, without exaggeration, one of the finest evenings you can have in the Balearics.
