Les Marais du Pays d'Auge & the Pont de Normandie Footpath
Most visitors photograph the Pont de Normandie from the Côte de Grâce and move on — but crossing it on foot or by bike, then looping back through the tidal marshes of the Estuaire de la Seine nature reserve, is one of the great free experiences in the region. The estuary wetlands are a major migratory stopover and hold species you simply won't see anywhere else in northern France.
Crossing the Pont de Normandie
The bridge has a dedicated pedestrian and cycling lane on its eastern side, giving a 2,143-metre walk high above the Seine with views of container ships, mud flats, the Le Havre refinery and, on clear days, the white cliffs of the Alabaster Coast to the north. The experience of being suspended 52 metres above the estuary on a structure this elegant is genuinely thrilling.
Access the pedestrian lane from the Honfleur toll plaza; the crossing takes about 25 minutes on foot. Cyclists can rent bikes from Honfleur's town centre and cross for free — motor vehicles pay a €5.60 toll but pedestrians and cyclists cross at no charge.
The Estuaire Marshes and Bird Reserve
On the Le Havre side, the Réserve Naturelle de l'Estuaire de la Seine protects 8,500 hectares of tidal mudflat, reed bed and wet meadow. The Maison de l'Estuaire visitor centre at Saint-Samson-de-la-Roque (30 km west) has trail maps, but the marshes closest to the bridge can be explored via the GR2 long-distance footpath that follows the south bank of the Seine.
In spring and autumn, avocets, black-tailed godwits, spoonbills and occasionally white storks pass through in large numbers. Bring binoculars; the light over open water at dawn is extraordinary and the paths are almost always empty.
