La Tortue Restaurant
On Rue de l'Homme de Bois, just a short walk from the harbour, La Tortue has been serving serious Norman food — cream-rich, cider-braised, unapologetically caloric — for decades, and it remains the locals' choice for a proper sit-down lunch rather than a tourist-facing quayside meal. The dining room is low-beamed and candlelit even at noon.
What to Order
The sole meunière is textbook: a whole Dover sole, butter-browned and finished with lemon and parsley, served with steamed potatoes. The escalope de veau à la crème Normande — veal in a Calvados and cream sauce with sautéed apples — is the dish that best captures the flavour identity of the Pays d'Auge.
Start with a dozen Isigny oysters or a terrine de campagne made in-house, and finish with a trou normand — a small Calvados sorbet served mid-meal to 'make room', a tradition that is both useful and delicious.
Cider and Calvados Pairings
The drinks list prioritises local producers: look for the demi-sec cidre from Domaine Dupont (Victot-Pontfol, 30 km south) and the Pommeau de Normandie as an aperitif — a blend of unfermented apple juice and Calvados that is sweeter and lower in alcohol than straight Calvados.
Lunch is the better-value sitting; the two-course formule déjeuner typically runs €22–28 and includes a glass of cider or wine. Book ahead on weekends and throughout July and August.
