La Tortue Restaurant
Tucked on the Rue de l'Homme de Bois a short walk from the harbour, La Tortue has been feeding serious eaters since 1986 with a menu that reads like a love letter to Calvados produce: sole meunière, veal kidneys in cream, tarte Tatin flambéed at the table. No fusion, no foam — just honest Norman cooking done with precision.
What to Order
Start with the assiette de fruits de mer if the season is right (autumn through spring): oysters, whelks, langoustines and brown crab clawed apart over crushed ice with shallot vinegar. Follow it with the escalope de veau à la crème et au Calvados, the dish that most honestly captures what Norman cooking is about.
The cheese trolley is non-negotiable: a selection of local raw-milk cheeses in different stages of affinage, served with walnut bread and a glass of Pommeau de Normandie (the apple-and-Calvados aperitif) if you are in the mood.
Booking & Budget
The dining room is small — about 40 covers — and fills every evening in high season. Book at least 48 hours ahead by phone or via the restaurant's website; walk-ins at lunch on weekdays are sometimes possible.
The three-course lunch menu at around €28–32 represents outstanding value for the quality; the evening à la carte will run €45–60 per person with a modest carafe of Muscadet or Pays d'Auge cider.
