Côte de Grâce & Chapelle Notre-Dame de Grâce
A short but steep drive or 25-minute walk up through beech forest brings you to the Côte de Grâce plateau, where a 17th-century sailors' chapel sits among ancient trees and a stone terrace delivers the finest elevated panorama over Honfleur, the Seine estuary and the Pont de Normandie on clear days.
The Chapel & the View
The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Grâce was built between 1600 and 1615 to replace an earlier chapel that slipped off the cliff — it has been a sailors' votive chapel ever since, its walls hung with model ships and ex-votos left by mariners giving thanks for safe return. The interior is simple, moving and completely authentic.
From the terrace just outside, the view sweeps west over the slate rooftops of Honfleur to the broad mouth of the Seine, with the elegant arc of the Pont de Normandie suspension bridge framing the horizon. Sunset here turns the estuary copper and rose.
Getting Up There
The most rewarding route on foot is the Chemin du Calvaire, a shaded path lined with 14 stone calvary stations that climbs from the Rue du Puits to the plateau in about 20 minutes — a gentle workout with a spiritual atmosphere.
Drivers can reach the plateau via the Route de la Côte de Grâce; a small free car park sits beside the chapel. The plateau also has a cider farm, the Ferme Saint-Siméon area, and the Maison Satie birthplace nearby.
