Le Donjon Restaurant, Hautefort
Tucked just below the château walls on the village square, Le Donjon is the kind of unpretentious Périgordian restaurant that serves the real thing: duck confit crisped in its own fat, homemade walnut cake and a carafe of Bergerac wine that costs less than a coffee in Paris. The shaded terrace looks straight up at the château towers.
What to Order
The set lunch menu (menu du jour) is the best-value option, typically running to three courses for under €20 and changing daily to reflect what the local farms have delivered that morning. The magret de canard — thick-cut duck breast with cèpe mushroom sauce — is a perennial fixture and should not be skipped.
For starters, the salade périgourdine arrives piled with gizzards confit, walnuts, croutons and a slice of foie gras pan-fried to order — a dish that encapsulates the entire food culture of the Dordogne in a single bowl.
Atmosphere & Practicalities
The interior is stone-walled and cool even in August, with exposed beams and mismatched wooden chairs that give it the feel of a farmhouse dining room rather than a tourist trap. Service is unhurried in the best French tradition — this is not a place for a quick lunch.
Book a terrace table for dinner in July and August, when the château is illuminated after dark and the view from your table becomes genuinely magical. Reservations are advisable on weekends throughout summer.
