Hautefort Village Market
Every Thursday morning the square below the château fills with stalls piled high with walnuts, foie gras, local cheeses and strawberries from the nearby Périgord Blanc farms — a market that feels genuinely local rather than tourist-facing. It is the single best place to stock a picnic basket before heading into the surrounding countryside.
What to Buy
The Dordogne is walnut country, and you will find freshly pressed walnut oil, whole dried walnuts and walnut-based pastries at almost every stall. Look for small-batch producers who bring their oil in unlabelled bottles — a sure sign it was pressed that season.
Foie gras and duck confits from local farms sit alongside jars of truffle-infused salt, dried cèpe mushrooms and small rounds of chèvre wrapped in chestnut leaves. Prices are noticeably lower here than in the tourist-heavy markets of Sarlat or Périgueux.
Atmosphere & Timing
The market runs from roughly 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is busiest between 9 and 11, when locals do their weekly shop alongside a handful of visitors. The café on the square opens early and serves strong espresso and warm croissants — claim a pavement table and watch the village come to life.
In summer a small brocante section appears at the far end of the square, with vintage linens, old postcards and the occasional piece of Périgordian pottery worth hunting through.
