Château de Hautefort
Rising above a sea of oak forest on a rocky spur, Château de Hautefort is one of the finest Renaissance châteaux in southwest France — a place so cinematic it doubled as a 17th-century hospital in the film 'The Ninth Day'. Its formal French gardens, clipped box hedges and panoramic terraces make it unmissable even before you step inside.
Architecture & History
Built between 1630 and 1670 for the Hautefort family, the château replaced a medieval fortress and was designed in a style closer to the Loire Valley than to the rugged Périgord Noir. Its round towers topped with slate domes, warm honey-stone walls and symmetrical facades feel almost theatrical against the Dordogne countryside.
The château narrowly escaped total destruction when a catastrophic fire gutted it in 1968; the Marquise de Bastard spent the last decades of her life overseeing a meticulous restoration, and the result is a testament to personal devotion as much as architectural heritage.
Gardens & Terraces
The formal gardens are among the most ambitious in the Dordogne, covering over two hectares with geometric box parterres, topiary and gravel walks that frame views over the rolling hills of the Périgord Blanc.
Arrive in late June when the roses are in full bloom and the lavender edging the terraces turns the air sweet. The panoramic terrace on the south side offers a sweeping 180-degree view over the village and forest that rewards any photographer.
Practical Visit Tips
Allow at least two hours to explore the interior rooms — the great hall, the chapel and the restored tapestry rooms — and the gardens separately. Guided tours in English are available in July and August.
The village of Hautefort below the château is worth a slow wander: the almshouses (hospice) directly opposite the castle gate date from the same 17th-century building campaign and are unusually well preserved.
