Hautefort Weekly Village Market
Every Tuesday morning the small square at the heart of Hautefort fills with local producers selling the kind of food you came to the Dordogne for — walnut oil pressed on the farm, foie gras in glass jars, seasonal vegetables and rounds of Cabécou goat's cheese still slightly warm. It is modest in size but entirely authentic, with almost no tourist trinkets in sight.
What to Buy
The walnut products are exceptional — look for huile de noix (cold-pressed walnut oil) and noix confites from producers in the Auvézère valley; both make brilliant, packable souvenirs that you genuinely cannot find at this quality in a supermarket.
Foie gras and confit de canard sold directly by local duck farmers are significantly cheaper here than in Sarlat or Périgueux, and the producers are happy to explain their methods if you speak a little French.
Market Atmosphere
The market runs from roughly 08:00 to 13:00 and the best selection is always in the first two hours, before the regulars have picked over the ripest tomatoes and the freshest chèvre.
Grab a coffee and a pain aux noix from the boulangerie on the square and eat it on the church steps — it is a quietly perfect Périgord morning ritual.
