Museo delle Navi Romane di Nemi (day-trip pairing)
Just 12 km from Grottaferrata on the rim of the Nemi crater lake, this museum houses the colossal bronze fittings, anchors and deck machinery recovered from two enormous pleasure barges built by Emperor Caligula in the 1st century AD — one of the strangest and most overlooked Roman artefacts in all of Lazio.
The ships and their story
Caligula had the barges built on Lake Nemi as floating palaces — complete with marble floors, bronze wolf-head mooring rings, lead pipes for running water and rotating statues. They sank after his assassination in 41 AD and lay on the lake bed for nearly 1,900 years before Mussolini had the lake partially drained to retrieve them in the 1930s.
The original wooden hulls were catastrophically destroyed by fire in 1944 — almost certainly deliberately — but the bronze fittings, tiles and mechanical components survived and are displayed in a purpose-built hangar on the lakeshore. Scale models show just how vast the ships were: the larger measured 71 metres long.
Combining Nemi with Grottaferrata
The village of Nemi perches dramatically on the crater rim above the museum and is famous throughout Italy for its fragole di Nemi — tiny, intensely perfumed wild strawberries sold from roadside stalls from May through June. A visit to the museum followed by a bowl of fragole with cream in the village piazza is one of the great low-key pleasures of the Castelli Romani.
The drive from Grottaferrata along the Via dei Laghi passes through the heart of the regional park with viewpoints over both Lake Nemi and Lake Albano — two flooded volcanic craters that look almost impossibly blue against the dark forest. Budget a full half-day for the combined outing.
