Belvedere del Tuscolo

A steep but thoroughly rewarding 45-minute hike above Grottaferrata leads to the ruins of ancient Tusculum and a panorama that stops first-time visitors dead in their tracks: the entire Roman Campagna rolling westward, with the dome of St Peter's floating on the horizon on clear days. Cicero had his favourite villa here — once you see the view, you'll understand why.

The Hike & the Ruins

The trail begins at the end of Via Anagnina in the upper part of town and winds through holm-oak woodland before breaking out onto the grassy ridge of ancient Tusculum. The ruins — a small Roman theatre, forum foundations and the so-called Villa of Cicero — are unfenced and freely explorable, which gives the whole place a wonderfully unmediated, time-travel quality.

The Roman theatre is remarkably intact: rows of tufa seating curve around the orchestra, and in spring the stage is carpeted with wildflowers. Sit in the cavea and look out over the valley — the view from the actors' perspective is itself a kind of performance.

The Summit Panorama

From the highest point of the ridge (about 670 m), the panorama sweeps from the Alban Hills in the south, across the flat expanse of the Campagna, to the Apennines in the east and — on the clearest winter mornings after rain — to the glinting Tyrrhenian Sea in the west. Rome's skyline, with St Peter's dome and the Vittoriano monument, sits about 20 km to the northwest.

Sunset here is spectacular: the light turns the tufa ruins amber and the distant city dissolves into a violet haze. Bring a picnic, a good wine from the abbey shop below, and no particular agenda.
