Lago di Nemi & the Flower Festival
The smaller and more intimate of the two crater lakes, Lago di Nemi sits in a near-circular volcanic caldera 318 metres above sea level, its surface so still it reflects the surrounding forest like a dark mirror. The lakeside village of Nemi — perched on the crater rim — is famous for its wild strawberries (fragoline di bosco) and holds a strawberry festival every June that draws locals from across the region.
The lake is also the site of one of antiquity's most extraordinary engineering feats: Emperor Caligula built two enormous pleasure barges here, which were raised from the lake bed in the 1930s. The Museo delle Navi Romane in Nemi displays full-scale reconstructions and original bronze fittings — a surprisingly moving experience.
Forest Trails & Chestnut Woods
The park's chestnut forests above Grottaferrata are at their most spectacular in October, when the canopy turns copper and gold and the ground is thick with fallen nuts. The trail from Grottaferrata toward Monte Cavo (the highest point of the Alban Hills at 949 m) passes through this forest before emerging onto the old Roman Via Triumphalis, a cobbled road that once carried victorious generals toward Rome.
Spring brings a different spectacle: orchids, cyclamen and wood anemones carpet the forest floor, and the air smells of wild garlic and damp volcanic earth. The park is genuinely uncrowded on weekday mornings — a remarkable fact given that it sits 20 km from the centre of one of Europe's busiest cities.
