Belvedere di Villa Cavalletti
Perched on the volcanic ridge above Grottaferrata, the grounds of Villa Cavalletti offer one of the most sweeping and least-visited panoramas in the entire Castelli Romani — a 180-degree sweep from the Alban Hills down across the Roman plain all the way to the glittering dome of St Peter's on a clear day.
The view that locals keep quiet
The villa itself is now a Salesian college and not open to tourists, but the terraced park and its belvedere wall are freely accessible from the road. In the late afternoon, when the light turns golden and Rome's skyline shimmers on the horizon, this is the kind of view that makes you reach for your camera every thirty seconds.
Unlike the famous Frascati belvedere a few kilometres away, Villa Cavalletti draws almost no tour groups. You are likely to share the terrace with nothing more than a few dog-walkers from the village and the odd local couple watching the sunset.
Walking the ridge to town
A pleasant 20-minute footpath leads downhill from the belvedere back into central Grottaferrata through old vine terraces and garden walls draped in wisteria. The walk is flat enough for most fitness levels and passes a small roadside shrine with fresh flowers — a very typical Lazio countryside detail.
Combine the belvedere visit with a late-afternoon aperitivo in the piazza below: the timing works perfectly, and you will arrive in town just as the locals begin their passeggiata.
