Parc Natural de la Marjal de Gandia

Wildlife and walking
The marjal hosts over 200 recorded bird species across the year, with purple herons, little bitterns and marsh harriers nesting in the reedbeds from spring through summer. Flamingos appear as irregular visitors in autumn, and the winter months bring large numbers of waders and wildfowl from northern Europe. A wooden boardwalk trail of around 2.5 km loops through the core zone, with two elevated hides positioned for unobtrusive observation.
The reedbeds are dominated by common reed (Phragmites australis) and bulrush, with open lagoons where you can spot red-knobbed coots and little grebes at close range. Dawn is the best time — the light is extraordinary and the birds are active before the coastal breeze picks up.
Context and access
The marjal covers roughly 740 hectares and is protected under the Valencian Community's natural parks network. An interpretation centre near the main entrance on Camí de la Marjal has free bilingual panels explaining the ecosystem, the history of traditional fishing in the lagoons and the ongoing restoration work to reduce invasive species.
Access is free and the main entrance is signposted from the Passeig Marítim beach promenade — it is genuinely walkable from the beach in under 15 minutes. Bring binoculars if you have them; insect repellent is advisable in June and July when mosquitoes are active near the reedbeds.
